In onze zoektocht naar de roots van Swing Jazz komen we sowieso terecht bij de Afro-Amerikaanse oorsprong. Wie Afro-Amerikanen in de jaren ‘30 aan de Oostkust van de VS zegt, ziet armoede, racisme, discriminatie en ontmenselijking, resten en gevolgen van de slavernij. Helaas zijn deze thema’s nog steeds actueel. De hele Black Lives Matter en Collective Voices for Change beweging blijft aantonen dat er nog veel kennis, begrip, erkenning en aanpassingen noodzakelijk zijn.

Als dansers en muzikanten kunnen en mogen we dit facet van onze geschiedenis niet negeren. We willen dit benoemen, bespreken, begrijpen en transponeren naar onze huidige tijd waarin dit nog steeds een actueel en relevant thema is.

Om onze referentiekaders in vraag te stellen en ons begrip te vergroten, organiseren we een Book club, panel gesprekken en lezingen rond dit thema.

Article - What my fellow white swing dancers can do to address systemic racism and support black dancers - Sinead McGrath

This was written in response to the systemic oppression of black and minority communities which has been highlighted by the recent loss of black lives due to the COVID-19 epidemic globally and to police brutality in the US. It was written after black voices in our community were met with silence in some quarters, the empathy and support of some, but very little call to action by non-black dancers. This is obviously not aimed at non-white dancers. I send all my admiration and support to our black dancers and thank you for continuing to call us out despite how exhausting this must be for you.

In Killjoy Quiz, the pleasant predictability of a television quiz gradually gives way to a much tougher thought exercise. Participants answer questions. Points are handed out. But what is the meaning of winning a quiz? One might know things about the world, but not necessarily understand the complexities behind the facts one knows. Killjoy Quiz subverts the idea of scoring points on knowledge by proposing a game where learning how to enter into dialogue is the ultimate goal. Words are powerful and eloquence is a weapon. The cunning multiple choice questions in this production will mercilessly expose a number of our biases.
