Ooit schreef ik mij impulsief in voor een eerste Lindy Hop les bij Crazy Legs. Niet goed beseffende welke danskriebel hier zou ontstaan. Al gauw ging ik mij ook verdiepen in solodansen zoals Authentieke Jazz, Blues en Afrikaanse dans. Als ik een choreografie maak, zitten er vaak verschillende stijlen in verweven. Die vrijheid om je eigen dans te creëren en je volledig te kunnen laten gaan op de muziek vind ik fantastisch. In mijn lessen probeer ik niet enkel te kijken naar de dans op zich, maar ook de geschiedenis en roots van de bewegingen die we doen krijgen aandacht.

Naast dansles geven en shaken op de dansvloer, treed ik ook geregeld op als mijn alter ego Sweet Elle. Tijdens deze acts breng ik een sensuele stijl van blues dans.

Optredens met een meer jazzy sfeer kan je terugvinden bij The Steam Heat Cats. Een dansgezelschap dat ik oprichtte samen met Bara Hřebačková en Sanne Kiekens.

Maar de echte kunst van het performen leerde ik ooit bij The Dipsy Doodles. Helaas treden wij niet meer op, maar ik herinner mij nog steeds mijn eerste performance. Een vuurdoop voor een publiek van wel 200 gasten.

In 2018 Augusto, Elias and Eugenio visited Gent for the first time. They are part of the Hodi Dance Company from Mozambique and have been a great inspiration for me. Not only because of their dancing and music, but also of the way they spread a message of love and care for one another.

Together with Bára, Zelino, Alexandre, Jill and Leni, I got the opportunity to train and perform with them. This performance during Gentse Feesten was the result of a two days practise.

I remember that after the gig the guys had to leave for the airport almost immediately. So our time of being together abruptly came to an end. Behind the Spiegeltent at Baudelo we had to say goodbye not knowing when we would meet again. We were standing in a circle, and in this moment of sadness, Eugenio started to sing. Immediately Elias and Augusto backed him up by singing, clapping and tapping their feet. And before I knew we were all dancing and joining this moment of parting.

I have thought about this moment a lot. It was so valuable to me, because it made me realize how, here in Europe, we are often so timid to share our emotions and how we feel about one another. We rarely sing out loud, or dance in front of other people.

One year later, I decided to travel to Mozambique and join a workshop there, organized by the Hodi Dance Company. Again I was confronted by the amazing dancers and especially their way of spreading love and care. It's just constantly present in their daily life. Every moment of joy, sadness, anger... is translated by moving your body and spreading your voice.

I hope I will be able to meet with these guys again sooner or later. Cause I really miss dancing and spending time together. And I also hope (or at least I'm trying) that in some kind of small way, I am also capable of spreading their message even further. With my own dancing and my own way of sharing love and care.
